Scotland is famously the home of golf, and the Cairngorms has no shortage of courses to practice your swing on. When you pick Grantown for your base, you have a few fantastic options close by.
A forgotten golfing hero
Get your day off to a great start with a round of golf at one of the finest golf courses in the Cairngorms National Park. Grantown Golf Club has been welcoming visitors since 1890, and is a magnificent 18-hole course with memorable views of the Cromdales and Cairngorms. Visitors are assured of a warm welcome at this popular golf course – do pre-book your tee time to avoid disappointment.
And Grantown Golf Course is offering a unique historical experience, inspired by one of the town’s forgotten sporting heroes.
Bobby Cruickshank enjoyed a fantastic golf career – including finishing runner-up in the US Open three times – but you might never have heard of him.
Cruickshank was born in Grantown in 1894, playing golf here in the early 1900s. He fought in World War I – where his brother was killed – and was taken prisoner. Following his escape from the camp, he went to America and built an impressive golfing career. He won 25 US tournaments and was the lead money winner on the US PGA Tour in 1927.
Now you can play with the same clubs as Cruickshank would have used.
Twelve sets of hickories have been refurbished for the experience, which has received funding from the Berry Burn Fund. You can try out nine holes – and enjoy a dram at the end to celebrate.
Contact 01479 872079 to book your experience or find out more at the Bobby Cruickshank Experience website.
Mountain views
If you’re a beginner or fancy a shorter round, try the 9-hole par 3 golf course just out of town at Cairngorm Activities. The 9-hole putting green also offers a fantastic activity for families. This course also provides superb views and a very warm welcome!
And you can stretch your golf adventures into a week by sampling courses in the surrounding area. Abernethy Golf Club, at Nethy Bridge, is famed for having a war memorial in the middle of one of the greens – imagine that for a hazard!
Or you could head to Aviemore, where the Spey Valley Championship Golf course is a real treat for golfers. With unrivalled views of the Cairngorms, you will definitely enjoy the walk, even if your score doesn’t quite hit the heights.
Book a table
You’ll be pretty peckish after that round so why not choose the 19th hole for a spot of lunch. Grantown Golf Club serves food throughout the summer months, allowing you to relax with a great view of the course.
Or you could dine at one of our top cafes or restaurants while you ponder how to spend the afternoon. If the skies are clear, the Viewpoints walk is easily accessible – just head towards Grantown Caravan Park. You can enjoy some amazing views whilst reflecting on that epic round of golf you played!
As night draws in, finish your day with a delicious meal at The Garth Hotel, concluded with a fireside dram of Speyside malt.
