Founded in 1765 and regarded as one of Scotland’s finest planned towns, Grantown boasts a wealth of history. If you’re looking to get an overview of the town’s past, there’s nowhere better to start your itinerary than Grantown Museum.
This wee building in the Burnfield area does a fantastic job of preserving and showcasing local exhibits, as well as providing tourist advice. Major exhibitions are held each year, looking in depth at different aspects of our history.
And one of their permanent attractions is perfect for fans of the hit series Outlander – a chance to dress up as our favourite romantic heroes, Jamie or Claire.
Outlander or Bridgerton?
The beautiful costumes from this programme and other have been reproduced and are available for adults to dress up in. One of the showstoppers is a reproduction of a striking red dress worn by Claire Randall in series two. Other outfits from the series include Claire’s wedding dress and a kilt outfit similar to that worn by Jamie, complete with cravat, coat, baldric and sword belt.
Fans of Netflix hit Bridgerton are not neglected either, with a selection of Regency style outfits available for ladies. And there’s a cutaway coat with waistcoat and breeches for the gentlemen.
Or perhaps ladies would rather visit the early 1900s and don the fashions seen in Downton Abbey?

A one hour experience includes trying on an outfit and the chance to have photographs taken. Hen parties, up to a maximum of six, can also be staged at the museum in the evenings, complete with champagne. Or you can go on-location wearing one of the outfits for a morning or afternoon, with nearby Ballindalloch Castle one of the most popular choices.
No matter which you choose, the experience is a unique chance to step back in history. Visit Adventures in Costume for more information and book your experience now.
In the footsteps of history
The museum is also a prime stop on the town’s heritage trail, created by The Grantown Society. Marked by a series of 21 plaques, the route includes the town’s most important buildings. They include The Garth Hotel, built in 1769, and Speyside House, the former grammar school and orphanage.
The Grantown Society has also bought a building on the High Street, operating it as a community hub. The Grantown Hub operates a cash machine, as well providing information about services and jobs in the town. The building also offers a flexible space for hot-desking, meetings or events, and has even hosted pop-up shops.
The trail will take you all over the town so there’s plenty of opportunity to stop off for a bite to eat and drink along the way. Sit down for a cuppa and cake at Scrumpy’s Coffee Shop in the High Street or Spey Models and Tea Room in the Square.
