Founded in 1765 and regarded as one of Scotland’s finest planned towns, Grantown boasts a wealth of history. There’s nowhere better to start than Grantown Museum.

This wee building in the Burnfield area does a fantastic job of preserving and showcasing local exhibits, as well as providing tourist advice.

And one of their new attractions is perfect for fans of the hit series Outlander. For the museum is offering the chance to dress up as Jamie or Claire as part of their new Adventures in Costume experience.

Jacobean or Regency?

The beautiful costumes from this programme and other have been reproduced and are available for adults to dress up in. One of the most striking costumes is Claire’s red dress from Outlander, worn in an episode set in Paris. Or perhaps you’d prefer to don Jamie’s kilt?

Maybe Regency is more your thing? Then choose costumes from Bridgerton and Pride and Prejudice.

No matter which you choose, the experience is a unique chance to step back in history. Visit Adventures in Costume for more information and book your own adventure.

In the footsteps of history

The museum is also a prime stop on the town’s heritage trail, created by The Grantown Society. Marked by a series of 21 plaques, the route includes the town’s most important buildings. They include The Garth Hotel, built in 1769, and Speyside House, the former grammar school and orphanage.

The trail will take you all over the town so there’s plenty of opportunity to stop off for a bite to eat and drink along the way. Sit down for a cuppa, cake or ice cream at Chaplin’s in the High Street or Spey Models and Tea Room in the Square.

If you want to challenge yourself whilst learning about a local historical tale, why not try the Wolf of Badenoch escape room at Escape Cairngorms. And if you make it out of that room, you can always have a go at the Prisoner of War themed room too. The challenge is to solve the clues and escape within an hour. Do you have what it takes to escape?
