A strong sense of community

The town and surrounding area are home to a number of active community groups who contribute in different ways to life, business and development in the area. They include the local community councils:

They also include our development and business development groups:

In addition, there are numerous other groups who work to improve life for everyone in the community. Our community is friendly and welcoming and many of the locals volunteer in these groups. Below is a list of our groups – who they are, what they do, how to get involved and much more.

Contact the Elderly

We are a charity dedicated to relieving the acute loneliness and isolation of people aged 75 and over who live alone without family, friends or other support networks nearby. We organise free, volunteer-led, monthly tea parties which take place in volunteers’ homes. These fun and friendly social events take place on Sundays, often the loneliest day of the week. Our volunteer drivers collect our guests from their homes and drive them to the tea party. Everyone stays to enjoy the tea.

Cromdale Community Council
Dulaig Park Renovation Project team

The project was set up by members of the community in 2019 to renovate and revitalise Dulaig Park, which lies in the heart of the town. The aim is to develop the space as a stimulating environment for all generations.

The first phase will establish a new play area within the park, with all new equipment for under 12s. The committee aims to raise at least £60,000 towards play equipment. Among the funders who have already pledged significant sums towards the renovation include:

  • Berry Burn Community Fund – £19,000
  • National Lottery, Community Fund – £6075
  • Cairngorms Green Recovery Fund – £5,240
  • Scotland Loves Local – £5,000
  • Highland Council’s Ward Discretionary Fund – £3,000

The community has also raised thousands of pounds towards the target.

Kompan has been selected as the play equipment provider and it is now hoped that work on the play area could start towards the end of 2021.

The second phase will carry out improvements to the playing field area, including levelling and reseeding the grass, and installing new goals.

If you would like to help the project, please visit our Facebook pages, Dulaig Park Fundraising and Dulaig Park Renovation.

Grantown Co-op Local Forum

The Co-op Local Forum is a part of the Co-op Community programme. The Forum is a voluntary group open to all co-op members. It can provide opportunities for members’ voices to be heard by the Co-op Members’ Council. It is at the heart of the community and works hand in hand with the Co-op store in Grantown, bringing people together and supporting them to deliver the projects and activities that matter to them.

Grantown Community Cinema

We are a small and dedicated group of volunteers who are looking to re-invigorate our community and provide a fresh and inviting space to meet, chat and most importantly bond through our love of film. Our aim is to house a community cinema in one of the rooms available in the YMCA.

Ultimately we want the space to become not just a place where people come together to watch films, but also a multi-purpose space that can be used by residents of all ages and by community groups. A place where our youth groups can showcase their own creativity, our historic society can tell visitors about the history of this town and the beautiful surroundings. A place that people old and young can mingle and watch a film as a community without feeling ostracised because there isn’t a cinema close enough for those of us who have no transport.

The aim is for this to become not just self-sufficient, but to also create funds to help re-invest in the Grantown community, such as additional renovations to the YMCA community centre and other projects in the future.

Inverallan Parish Church

A Church of Scotland denomination serving the parish of Inverallan in which the main town is Grantown-on- Spey. Adjacent to Inverallan Parish are the parishes of Cromdale & Advie and Dulnain Bridge. These three parishes are now linked, which means that one Minister serves these three communities, although the organisation of church affairs within each parish remains within the remit of the individual Kirk Sessions. Our Minister is Rev. Gordon Strang; he has the responsibility of leading worship in each of the 3 parishes every Sunday morning, and has an assistant Rev. Mary Duncanson.

Badenoch & Strathspey Ramblers

We are a local walking group, part of Ramblers Scotland. We cover the whole of the strath with members from Newtonmore to Grantown and most places in between. We walk once a fortnight, normally on Saturday. Walks vary from 5-mile low-level walks to the occasional strenuous hill walk. The majority of walks are in the strath but we often travel further afield to experience different areas. A link on our website takes you to our latest programme and non-members are welcome to join us for up to three walks without joining Ramblers.
